    Detailed:

Cataclysm illustrates a significant step in the history of the Warcraft Universe. The return of Deathwing has changed everything forever and the world-moving forces, the representatives of all races, have to make grave decision which will influence everyone's future.

The following list specifies some of the most important NPCs in World of Warcraft Cataclysm:

    Warchief Thrall
Thrall, Warchief of the Horde, is the incarnation of the nobleness, strength and unwavering heroism of the Orcs. He lead his people out of the detention camps of Lordaeron and into an age of freedom and prosperity, and under his leadership the Horde manifested itself as one of the driving forces in Azeroth. As a shaman, Thrall feels a strong connection to the elements which have often be useful for him by sharing their wisdom. Yet even as the Horde's trust in their Warchief seems unshakable, there remain some who still hang on to the old legends about the wildness and the war spirit of the Orcs and those disapprove of Thrall's decision. Time will show if the recent resentment in the relationship to Garrosh Hellscream will remain a unique incident or probably already offer a glint of future developments.

    Garrosh Hellscream
When he was young, Garrosh knew his father Grom Hellscream only from the stories which depicted him as the one responsible for the misfortune of his people. Yet after hearing about Groms redemption and his heroic sacrifice through which he freed the Orcs once and for all from the servitude for the demons, Garrosh willingly accepted his father's legacy as a fearless warrior and born leader. From time to time, Garroshs eagerness brings about conflicts with the Horde's Warchief. Thralls decision to explore Northrend instead of mobilizing the Horde right away, lead to the frustrated Garrosh challenging the Warchief to a duel in the Ring of Honor. An attack by the followers of the Lich King stopped the duel dead in its tracks. So there still remains a need for clairification between Garrosh and Thrall... and Garroshs hot-headed ruthlessness begins to bother all those who are familiar with the dangerous rage of the Hellscream bloodline.

    King Varian Wrynn
The king of Stormwind who just recently took his rightful place on the throne, thinks poorly of the Horde. There are many reasons for his demeanor: When Varian was still a child, he saw his father murdered by the half-orc Garona; the former Warchief of the Orcs, Orgrim Doomhammer, slew the noble Anduin Lothar who had safely escorted Varian to Lordaeron after the fall of Stormwind; Varian himself was later enslaved by the Orcish gladiator trainer Rehgar Earthfury; and eventually at the Wrathgate, many brave Alliance soldiers died by the hands of the Royal Apothecary Society of the Forsaken. Varian, who had always been suspicious about the Orcs, discovered that the Royal Apothecary Society had already worked for years on creating a new plague. The events during the battle for Undercity persuaded the king that the Horde had been given too much scope for too long – the time had come to adjust the conditions.

    King Genn Greymane
The people of the Alliance remember the king of Gilneas as a proud, determined, cunning and arrogant man. He and his armies supported the Alliance in the Second War but afterwards Genn constituted that the Alliance benefited more of Gilneas as the other way round. He ordered the Greymane Wall to be closed to all strangers and shut his kingdom off from the outside world and their conflicts. But fate, it seemed, wanted to teach the king a lesson in humility: the Wall accomplished the task of keeping the people of Gilneas safe from outsiders, but it also sealed the fate of its inhabitants. When the Worgen curse befell the lands of Gilneas and the first timid attempts of containment failed, Greymane found himself in a fierce struggle for the humanity of his people.

    Queen Azshara
Strong-willed, manipulative and blessed with unmatched beauty – Azshara commands much more magical talent than almost every other night elf. Ten thousand years ago she and other Highborn lead Azeroth close to the edge of complete destruction when they mindlessly practiced arcane magic and awakened the attention of Sargeras. Stimulated by the influence of the dark titan, Azshara started a scheme to bring the Burning Legion to Azeroth, a plan that resulted in the War of the Ancients and the separation of the world. Beautiful and cruel Azshara was devoured by the waves, never to be seen again... so people believed. The Naga revered Azshara as a demi-goddess and regard her as very alive. How she could have survived the separation of the world and at what price, these are secrets that nobody dared to pursue down to the present day.

    Deathwing
Few have ever fallen farther than the ancient Neltharion. As one of the five dragon aspects which were chosen by the Titans, it was his duty to rule over the Earth and the depths of the world. He embodied the strength of Azeroth and served the dragon queen Alexstraza as valuable support. Yet as powerful, kind-hearted and wise as he was, even Neltharion could not escape the dark power that slumbered underneath the surface of Azeroth. As time passed, the infamous whispers of the sleeper dug their talons deep into the dragon's thoughts and let the seed of madness sprout. He betrayed the other aspects and when he turned against his brothers and completely fell to the corruption, he was transformed from Neltharion, the Earth Guard, to Deathwing, the Destroyer. Eventually, the other aspects combined their powers to defeat him – but not destroy him. Hidden from the world, he lets time heal his wounds and nurtures his burning hatred. His return will change the face of Azeroth... forever.

New Race for the Horde: The Goblins
Once the slaves of the jungle trolls on the island of Kezan, the goblins were forced to mine Kaja'mit ore from the volcanic interior of Mount Kajaro.

The trolls used this powerful mineral for their voodoo rituals but it had unexpected effects on their slaves which were constantly in touch with it: Kaja'mit let the goblins develop amazing cunning and intelligence. After secretly creating their own powerful artifacts in the fields of engineering and alchemy, the goblins were soon able to bring down their suppressors and make Kezan their home. The mines which had been their prison, their slave quarters and the starting point of their rebellion, evolved to be their capital city, Undermine. A confusing network of tunnels, caves and lava channels winding through the heart of the island, Undermine embodies the complex and erratic mindset of the goblins.

Their inherent greed soon led to the goblins becoming known as masters of mercantilism. During the First War, many trade lords came to power when the cleverest of the goblins learned to make profit of the conflict. Great fortunes were amassed and Kezan became the hub of the goblins' merchant fleet. One of the trade barons agreed to provide the services of his faction to the Horde. After the Horde's defeat, the remaining goblins drew conclusions from the negative example of their kin, stating that profits could be doubled if they kept away from such restrictive relationships. At the end of the Third War, the goblins provided the Horde as well as the Alliance with weapons, vehicles and devious services. However, this could not go on forever...

In recent times, the goblins of Kezan found the Alliance to be a new enemy – unexpected and unprofitable encounters with that faction forced some trade barons to abandon their absolute neutrality. After renewing the pacts with their former allies, the goblins were received with open arms in the Horde.

New Race for the Alliance: The Worgen
The Worgen are a race of cruel wolfmen that spread fear in the hearts of men just by mentioning their name. There are many theories about their origin but the truth is still obscure and unknown.

Records indicate that the Worgen existed in Kalimdor for some time. Some indications which were just recently discovered suggest that their true origin is connected with the night elfs and a secret order of druids from Kalimdors distant past. Yet until new evidence is revealed, all this remains pure speculation.

The first proven emergence of the Worgen in the Eastern Kingdoms can be traced back to the time of the Third War, when the Archmage Arugal attempted to use the wolfmen as a weapon against the Scourge. This weapon soon turned against him when the Worgen curse quickly spread among the human pupulation and transformed ordinary men and women into raging beasts.

Arugal attended to many of the Worgen whom he regarded as his children, and withdraw to the keep of the noble Baron Silverlaine which soon became known as Shadowfang Keep. Yet the curse could not be contained. It continued to ravage Silverpine Forest and even spread to the legendary kingdom of Gilneas, surrounded by a huge wall, where the curse soon reached an epidemical scale.

The citizens of Gilneas found themselves trapped and void of all hope for escape. They retracted even farther into the marooned kingdom and survived, always living in fear of the relentless menace which lurked outside of the barricades.

Tensions between the expelled populace erupted time and again and finally led to a civil war which now threatens to destroy the harassed kingdom even more.

Yet among the citizens of Gilneas, there are still those who have hope – many believe that there might be a cure for the Worgen curse. Others have almost abandoned all hope and wait in fear for the day when the barricades will be vanquished and the people of Gilneas will lose their humanity once and for all.
